Russell Martin

Russell is a ceramic artist living in Cornwall, specializing in sgraffito onto hand built ceramic vessels. His work is inspired by the rich flora & fauna, breathtaking landscapes and timeless folklore of the South West.

Creating his pieces begins with immersing himself in rugged coastlines, rolling hills, coastal villages and tidal tales. Sketching; people, plants, animals and soaking in the landscapes inform the foundation for his characterful designs and visual narratives, resulting in textured, detailed artworks inspired by their rural and coastal surroundings.

Russell’s primary medium, sgraffito ceramics, allows him to carve detailed designs into the clay, revealing contrasting layers beneath. This technique involves a meticulous process that capture the delicate interplay between light and shadow. This process allows him to illustrate freehand images onto individual clay forms, which result in each piece being unique- no two pots are the same! This requires patience and precision, but it's incredibly rewarding to see the final image emerge.

The aim for his art is to resonate with viewers, offering a sense of connection to a place, time and a moment of reflection.
